What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free platform developed by Google that lets website owners, SEO professionals, and developers monitor how their site appears in Google Search. It shows you which pages are indexed, which keywords bring visitors to your site, what technical errors exist, and how your content performs in search results.

Unlike Google Analytics — which tells you what happens after a user lands on your site — GSC tells you what happens before the click. It is your window into how Google sees your website.

As an SEO expert, I use GSC every single day. It is a two-way communication channel between website owners and Google — a dashboard where Google tells you exactly what it thinks of your site, what it can and cannot access, and what opportunities you are missing.

GSC Dimensions & Metrics

In Google Search Console, a Dimension is how your data is grouped, and a Metric is a number that measures performance.

The 5 Core Dimensions

  • Queries: The specific search terms users typed into Google before landing on your website.
  • Pages: The individual URLs on your website.
  • Countries: The geographical location of the user performing the search.
  • Devices: Breaks data down by Desktop, Mobile, and Tablet.
  • Search Appearance: Groups performance by how your result appeared (Rich Result, AMP, Video, etc.).

The 5 Core Metrics

  • Clicks: Total number of times a user clicked on your URL from Google Search.
  • Impressions: Every time your URL appeared in a search result.
  • CTR (Click-Through Rate): Clicks divided by Impressions, expressed as a percentage.
  • Average Position: Your average ranking position across all queries.
  • Average Position (Page): The average ranking for a specific URL across all its queries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between GSC and Google Analytics?

GSC shows you what happens before the click (search behavior), while GA4 shows what happens after (site behavior). GSC is your primary tool for SEO optimization.

How often should I check Google Search Console?

At a minimum, check GSC weekly. Specifically, review the Performance Report for trends and the Coverage Report for new indexing errors.

Can I see my competitors' data in GSC?

No. GSC only shows data for properties you have verified ownership of. For competitors, you need third-party tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush.

Why are some of my pages not indexed?

Common reasons include noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, low-value content, or lack of internal links. Use the URL Inspection Tool to find the exact cause.

What is Average Position and why does it fluctuate?

It is the average ranking of your pages across all queries. Fluctuations are normal due to personalization, algorithm updates, and competitor changes.
